In February of this year, the container throughput of the Port of Los Angeles in the United States was 487,846 TEUs, a sharp drop of 43% year-on-year. Among them, imports were 249,407 TEUs, a decrease of 41% year-on-year; exports were 82,404 TEUs, a decrease of 14% year-on-year. In addition, the total amount of empty containers was 156,035 TEUs, a decrease of 54% year-on-year.
In the first two months of this year, the total container throughput of the Port of Los Angeles was 1,213,860 TEUs, a decrease of 30% compared to 1,723,360 TEUs in 2022.
Regarding this phenomenon, Gene Seroka, the executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, explained that "many factors such as the overall slowdown in global trade, backlogs in US warehouses, and the transfer of cargo from US West Coast ports have exacerbated the decline in container throughput at the Port of Los Angeles." He added that more goods are expected to be processed at the Port of Los Angeles in March, but container throughput may remain below average levels in the first half of 2023.
